Bored of Borders: cross Europe from North Cape to Gibraltar on Nordic skates

Borders? I've never seen one, but I've heard they exist in minds of some people.

From north to south. It could be easy with a flight, just few hours, but each person needs to choose his own way. Karlis has found his own as well: to cross Europe from North Cape to Gibraltar on Nordic skates in 60 days and set a new Guinness World Record – the fastest crossing of Europe on Nordic Skates.

Now the long travel is about to start. You can check the countdown on Bored of Borders. We are making an interview with him and, hoping to finish it before the end of the project, we decide to publish a first article, because Karlis and his mission deserve it. 

So let introduce him:

"My name is Karlis Bardeli, I am a 28 years old environmental project manager working in waste recycling field with a huge passion for adventures. I have been snowboarding for 15 years (with a lot of exciting free rides in Alps) and climbing for 8 years. In 2005 I became completely addicted to mountains. It started with climbing Elbrus and Mont-­‐ Blanc and later on I switched to more technical climbing."

And what you tell us about your mission? 

"It all really starts with the question -­‐ what would you do, if you could do anything in the world?

If I am really honest to myself then to me this answer is: go on adventures. On a personal level, this is where I feel free, where I learn about myself and the world. Every adventure has given me more and more confidence that I can cope with any challenges that I might face. And that everything is possible. On February, 2011 me and my partner where attempting to climb the 6th highest waterfall in the world (Norway, Vinnufossen). I fell and broke my right ankle. Looking for a new daily training after the rehabilitation I came across Powerslide Nordic skates and got hooked. Soon after I started preparing for a new challenge. Something that noone has ever done before. To cross Europe North to South on Nordic skates.

This is going to be the first step towards what I hope will become a life journey."

But Karlis offers us a lot of laughters too, every day in his facebook page and a lot of funny videos. Probably this is his way to challenge the world and mother nature, always smiling.
This is what we need, guys (or super-humans?) who can make dream normal people.
So, come on, Karlis, we are all cheering for you!

Karlis l'ha trovato: attraversare l'Europa da Capo Nord a Gibilterra su North skates in 60 giorni e stabilire un nuovo Guinness World Record - la più veloce traversata d'Europa su north skates.

Stiamo realizzando un'intervista con lui e, sperando di ultimarla prima della fine del progetto, abbiamo deciso di pubblicare un primo articolo, perché Karlis e la sua missione meritano più visibilità.
Quindi cerchiamo di capire chi è:

"Mi chiamo Karlis Bardelis, sono un 28enne responsabile di un progetto ambientale che lavora nel settore del riciclaggio dei rifiuti, con una grande passione per le avventure . Ho praticato snowboard per 15 anni (con un sacco di emozionanti free rides sulle Alpi) e scalata da 8 anni . Nel 2005 sono diventato completamente dipendente della montagna. Ho iniziato con l'arrampicata del Monte Elbrus - Blanc e poi sono passato ad arrampicate più tecniche."

E che cosa ci dici a proposito della tua missione ?

"Tutto inizia con una domanda - che cosa faresti, se tu potessi fare qualcosa nel mondo ?
Ad essere davvero onesto con me, la risposta è: andare alla ricerca di avventure. E' questo che mi fa sentire libero, che mi fa imparare di più su me stesso e sul mondo. Ogni avventura mi ha dato sempre più fiducia, mi ha convinto che posso affrontare tutte le sfide. E che tutto è possibile. Nel febbraio 2011 io e il mio compagno abbiamo tentato di scalare la sesta cascata più alta del mondo (Norvegia , Vinnufossen) . Sono caduto e  mi sono rotto la caviglia destra. Alla ricerca di un nuovo allenamento dopo la riabilitazione, mi sono imbattuto nei Powerslide north skates e ne me ne sono innamorato. Subito dopo ho iniziato la preparazione per una nuova sfida. Qualcosa che nessuno aveva mai fatto prima. Attraversare l'Europa da nord a sud sui pattini nordici.
Questo sarà il primo passo verso quello che spero diventerà un viaggio di vita."

Ma Karlis ci offre anche un sacco di risate ogni giorno nella sua pagina facebook e tanti video divertenti . Probabilmente questo è il suo modo di sfidare il mondo e madre natura, sempre sorridendo .
Abbiamo bisogno di persone così, persone (o super-umani?) che possano far sognare le persone normali. Quindi, dai, Karlis, siamo tutti con te!

Five for ImPressing: Sophie Tarca

Name, Surname, Age and how long have you been taking photos?

Sophie Tarca, 27. I have been taking photos for close to 5 years now.

What cameras do you work with?

I began shooting with a Pentax K1000 that I bought for $20 from a school in 2008 (they were tearing down their darkroom to make way for a computer lab). I think even after all this time it is still my favourite camera to use, although I haven’t shot with it for awhile. Currently my Nikon N55 is getting the most use.

What does photography mean to you?

It is a way to document and share an event that has moved me in some way.

Name, Surname, Age and how long have you been taking photos?
Angeles Peña, 27, I have always been interested in photography, but since 2006 I started to take pictures more consciously.

What cameras do you work with?
Most of the time I work with a Nikon F5  and a Hasselblad 500 cm, both on film.

What does photography mean to you?
It’s the way we see the world, pointing what we think it’s important, what captures our interest and the things we want to remember – Narrating stories, storing memories - Many things first become visible to us via the images we see of them.

What are your favourite subjects?
Life is my favorite subject. I love Nature, how everything changes and turn into another shape, sunsets, rain, friendship, mountains, water, light, music & love.

What else do you do besides photography?
Photography plays a very important roll in my life, so most of things that I do are related to it.

What does it distinguishes you, in your opinion, from other photographers?
I think my photography is very intimate, so I might say that my own point of view of my life and my story its what makes my work different from others people’s way of seeing. I like how you can be in the same place and it's never the same.

Which artistic influences affect your works?
Everything we like affects our ways.  I really enjoy being in open spaces listening to music. I think I have a lot of Friedrich’s influences, romanticism. Lately I’ve been seen a lot of paintings and I feel very identified with some impressionists artists, I love their color palette and the way they display their “elements”.

What is your way to shoot? Do you imagine the whole scene and prepare the set, or relies on oestrus of the moment? What are your future plans?
Most of my work relies on oestrus of the moment, I think that’s what some people like about my photography, real stories in real places. My favourite photographs are the ones which narrate a scene. I try to find those beautiful details that make our days. I don’t hunt for images; I let them come to me.  My favorite photos are the completely spontaneous and natural ones even though at this moment I’m starting to imagine some scenes Id like to capture, but not taking the pictures yet. I’m writing down some ideas and I’m also learning a lot about black & white fine art photography and I’m very exited.
Color is very important in my pictures, I like the challenge of changing my way of seeing into black, grey and white.

What is the photo you'd dream to take?
It could be a sunset, at the sea, with huge cliffs. All of my best friends should be in the picture, somehow, we have never been all together in that natural scenario, we have always been together at the mountains.

What photographer do you recommend us to watch? 
I like the work of a friend of mine, Crista Leonard. She was raised in the mountains as I was, and we live very far away from the other, but somehow I feel very identified with her way of seeing. - Going into  “classic”, I like lot the work of Jock Sturges, Sally Mann & Julia Margaret Cameron- And I think Mark Borthwick’s work is very interesting.

Cos’è la fotografia per lei? Quanto l’obiettivo influenza la vita di tutti i giorni?

E' il modo in cui vediamo il mondo, incentrare l'attenzione su cosa riteniamo importante, su ciò che cattura il nostro interesse e le cose che vogliamo ricordare. Narrare storie e immagazzinare ricordi. 

I suoi soggetti preferiti?

La vita è il mio soggetto preferito. Amo la natura, tutto ciò che cambia e assume altri contorni, i tramonti, la pioggia, l'amicizia, le montagne, la natura, la luce, la musica e l'amore.

Cosa fa quando non scatta foto?

La fotografia ricopre un ruolo importante nella mia vita, quindi la maggior parte della cose che faccio sono collegate ad essa. 

Cosa la distingue, a suo giudizio, da altri fotografi?
Credo che la mia fotografia sia molto intima, quindi potrei dire che il mio punto di vista sulla vita è quello che rende il mio lavoro diverso da quello di altri. Mi piace anche come tu possa essere nello stesso posto, ma che esso non sia mai lo stesso. 

I suoi lavori di quali influenze artistiche risentono?

Tutto influenza il mio modo di lavorare. Mi diverto a stare in posti aperti ascoltando musica. Credo che Friedrich e il romanticismo abbiano influenzato realmente il mio lavoro. Successivamente ho avuto modo di vedere diversi quadri e credo di potermi identificare nei lavori di alcuni impressionisti. Amo i loro colori e il modo in cui essi mostrano le loro caratteristiche.

Qual è il suo modo di scattare? Si immagina tutta la scena e predispone il set, oppure si affida all’estro del momento? Quali sono i  suoi progetti futuri?

Principalmente il mio lavoro si basa sull'estro del momento, credo che sia questo che le persone amino nelle mie fotografie, vere storie in posti autentici. Le mie fotografie favorite sono quelle che narrano una scena. Non "caccio" la foto, la lascio giungere a me. Le mie foto preferite sono completamente spontenee e naturali. Comunque ho iniziato anche ad immaginare le foto che vorrei scattare, senza realizzare veramente. Butto su carta, semplicemente, le idee. Sto anche imparando un po' riguardo il bianco e nero e ne sono entusiasta. 

Il colore è molto importante nelle mie fotografia, ma amo anche la sfida di cambiare il mio modo di vedere il mondo in bianco e nero. 

Qual è la foto che sogna di scattare?
Dovrebbe essere un tramonto sul mare con una immensa scogliera. Tutti i miei migliori amici dovrebbero essere in quella foto. Stranamente, non siamo mai stati tutti insieme in un simile scenario, è sempre accaduto in paesaggi di montagna.

Un fotografo che ci consiglia di tenere d’occhio?
Mi piacciono i lavori di una mia amica, Crista Leonard. E' cresciuta sulle montagne dove sono cresciuto io e, attualmente, viviamo lontani l'uno dell'altra, ma ancora mi riesco ad identificare nel suo modo di vedere il mondo. Passando al "classico" amo i lavori di Jock Sturges, Sally Mann & Julia Margaret Cameron. Credo che anche i lavori di  Mark Borthwick siano molto interessanti. 

Five for Impressing: Lucie Malbéqui

Name, Surname, Age and how long have you been taking photos?

Lucie Malbéqui (my name on internet is also Clotilde Boisrenard), I am 21 and I am taking picture since I am 16.

What cameras do you work with?

A Chinonflex, a 600 SE and a Fuji x100 (sometime just my iPhone).

What does photography mean to you?

For me this is a way to catch time or to transform it. This is the most accurate medium to reality, and there is so many way to transform this using of photography to show what you want to show. In my pictures, for exemple, I’d like to show timeless scenes, where people and places can’t be located in a specific time.

How many stores are currently sell your products?

Four in Latvia: Paviljons, Pop Art, Bang Bang, Taste Latvia. You could find our products also In Iko Iko in Copenhagen, a small shop, and soon in a new store opening in Estonia. In addition, we are negotiating to enter in the Lithuanian market. On the Internet, you can find us on Red Mint, the British company that pays particular attention to Eastern European designers.

What is your opinion about your brand after six months of life?

Surely it is a very demanding job. If you have any other business, you have to work something like 4 or 6 hours per day, if you have a business in the fashion world you have to work at least 40 hours a week. We are still learning, no one has experience in how to run a company, but we love what we do. We are learning so much in fashion business.

Intervista a Clet Abraham

I più probabilmente conosceranno già Clet Abraham e, anche coloro che non avessero mai sentito pronunciare il nome dell'artista, nato in Francia, ma residente nella fulgida culla del Rinascimento (Firenze), avranno sicuramente avuto modo di incontrare più di una volta le sue opere.
SSmyL lo ha intervistato per voi:


Come e quando nasce l’idea per la sua sticker art?
Nasce come risposta all’invasione dei cartelli stradali, che veicolano un messaggio imperativo e umiliante. Ho voluto dargli quello che gli mancava: un contenuto umanistico.

Quali sono le sue fonti di ispirazione? 
La vita.

La sua arte ha sempre dei riferimenti a madonne, crocefissi, diavoli, e molto altro. Può spiegarci perché? Quale idea vuole portare?
La nostra società si è costruita sui principi della religione cattolica, è, quindi, importante parlarne. Vorrei veicolare un omaggio al cristo, alla sua parola ed al suo esempio, ma negare il dogma, che rappresenta per me una limitatezza alla spiritualità.

Come si è diffusa l’arte di Clet Abraham? Dove possiamo trovare le sue opere? Solo in Italia o anche all’estero? Quali le prossime tappe?
Mi potete trovare anche a Parigi, Londra, Berlino e Valencia.

La street art era considerata un’arte secondaria, se non addirittura una forma artistica nociva. Solo recentemente sta acquistando credito, anche dopo favorevoli esperienza (prima tra tutte quella di Bansky). Cosa ne pensa lei a riguardo? Come definirebbe la sua arte? 
La street-art è oggi l’unica via per un espressione veramente indipendente, l’importante è, però, che sappia reinventarsi. Io sono anche in parte uno street-artist.

Ha mai avuto problemi a causa delle sue opere? Ci è sembrato di sentire che Pistoia non abbia apprezzato molto il suo lavoro…
L’unica multa in tutta europa me l’ha fatto il comandante dei vigili di Pistoia, è stata molto diminiuta facendo ricorso, ma vorrei fare appello per annullarla, non posso accettare di essere accusato di sporcare e imbrattare. Due giorni fa è stato arrestato lo stesso comandante per corruzione.

Quali sono i  suoi progetti per il futuro? 
Tanti

Ha qualche artista da consigliarci di tenere d’occhio?
A Firenze sono curioso di vedere l’evoluzione di “guerriglia SPAM” , ma ce ne sono tanti di bravi.

Wüest Oliver, 26 anni. Scatto foto da quando ne avevo 17.

Qual è la sua attrezzatura? 

Lavoro con una Canon 5D Mark II, una Mamiya 7II e, a volte, con una Polaroid SX-70.

Cosa significa per le la fotografia?

La fotografia è per me dipingere con la luce e fare in modo che oggetti e soggetti riflettano il loro significato nascosto.

Torniamo nuovamente con le nostre interviste fotografiche. Se ve la foste persa, vi consigliamo di buttare un occhio all'ultima intervista fatta al talentuoso Eduardo Garcia Fernandez.

Nome, Cognome, Età e da quanto scatta foto?

Yura Kurnosov. Nato nel 1970 in Kazakhstan. Vivo e scatto foto in Mosca. 

La fotografia è sempre stata un mio grande interesse fin dall'infanzia. Imparavo allo stesso tempo a scattare e stampare. Fu mio padre che mi comprò la mia prima macchina fotografica e mi fece toccare con mano la magia della fotografia. 

Qual è la sua attrezzatura? 

La mia camera preferita è la Rolleiflex, ma prima, per un certo periodo, ho utilizzato anche Pentacon e Hasselblad. 

Cosa significa la fotografia per lei?

Una foto, per me, esprime la propria visione su persone ed oggetti differenti. La mia visione e la mia interpretazione del mondo. Uno sguardo sulle persone. 

Con la fotografia sto cercando solamente di mostrare i soggetti come vorrei e vedo tali soggetti.  

Quali sono i suoi soggetti preferiti?

Amo i ritratti. Semplici, eleganti, minimalisti. Mi dedico anche in immagini still life altrettanto minimaliste.

Cosa fa oltre a fotografare? 

Vivo e amo la luce solare. Odio l'inverno. Cresco due figli e la fotografia è al contempo un hobby e un lavoro. 

Qual è la foto che sogna di realizzare? 

Non lo so, fotografo le persone esclusivamente perché mi da piacere. 

Un fotografo che ci consigli di seguire?

Voglio raccomandarvi di guardare i fotografi classici e anche i pittori. Buttare un occhio attento alla storia, alle proprie radici, a ciò che siete.

Hi! My name is Yura Kurnosov. Born in 1970 in Kazakhstan. I live and doing photography in Moscow (Russia).

Photos taken a great interest in the childhood . At the same time and learned to develop and print. My father bought me the first camera and taught photographic magic.

What cameras do you work with?

My favourite camera - Rolleiflex. 

But before a certain period, I also used 'Pentacon' and 'Hasselblad'.

What does photography mean to you?

A photo, in my understanding, expresses their vision on the different objects and people. My view and my interpretation of the world. This observation of people.

I'm just trying to show them how I want to see them.

Your favorite subjects seems to be people. What are behind a portrait? Which is the message behind a single photo? 

I love the portrait. Simple, sleek, minimalist. Isrpolzuyu in the portrait of naked motives.

It is also very much a minimalist still life.

What else do you do besides photography?

In addition to photography I live, and enjoy the sunshine). I hate winter.

Grove has two children. Photography - this is a hobby and work.

What is the photo you'd dream to take?

Do not even know. I photograph people, because it gives me pleasure.

What photographer do you recommend us to watch?

I would recommend watching the classics of photography, painting. More deeply into history, into the roots of the people, of which you are.
